Akinyele has been studying, teaching and performing African, Caribbean and Brazilian percussion in the SF Bay Area since 1978. He earned his BA in Humanities at New College in 1993, focusing on the relationship between music and social change in the Caribbean region. From 1989 to 2012, he taught music and international African history at Meadows-Livingstone Elementary School in San Francisco. These classes focused on the global continuity of African civilization. Akinyele is the founder and director of The Troublemakers Union, an ensemble which creates and promotes “international music for human rights.
